住宅「MOTÖRHEAD」のリビングのために製作した、正方形のローテーブル。ガレージの愛車をリビングから眺めて暮らす住まい手のために、ガレージの工場的な空気をリビングへと引き込む家具としてデザインした。
1m角・厚さ30mmのウォルナットの天板を、スチールのアングルと角パイプで組んだフレームが支える。下段には、四方へクランク状に折れ曲がりながら伸びるバーと、その上に浮かぶスチールの中板。具体的なモチーフがあるわけではないが、車のパーツや機械を思わせる工業的なディテールを随所に盛り込んだ。天板の四隅は下面をしゃくってアングルの脚を差し込み、木やせを見込んでフレームを天板よりわずかに小さくつくるなど、無垢材と鉄の取り合いにも気を配っている。
製作は、ガレージとリビングの間のスチールパーティションも手掛けた愛媛のパートナー鉄工所に依頼した。同じデザインで、サイズ違いのダイニングテーブルもつくっている。
A square low table produced for the living room of the house MOTÖRHEAD. For an owner who lives with his beloved cars in view from the living room, it was designed as a piece of furniture that draws the industrial, workshop air of the garage into the living space.
A walnut top, one meter square and 30 millimeters thick, rests on a frame of steel angles and square tubes. Below, bars extend in four directions, bending in crank-like turns, with a steel shelf floating above them. There is no specific motif, but industrial details reminiscent of car parts and machinery run throughout. The underside of each corner of the top is rebated to receive the angle-steel legs, and the frame is made slightly smaller than the top to allow for the wood's shrinkage, care taken wherever solid wood meets steel.
The table was made by our partner ironworks in Ehime, which also built the steel partition between the garage and the living room. A dining table of the same design, in a different size, was also made for the house.
